Short Films Too Long for You? Try 15-Second Films.

JK Evanczuk / Thursday, May 21, 2009 View Comments

British filmmaker Peter Johnston is sick of “bladder-straining, buttock-aching movies which often last up to two, sometimes two and a half hours.” So he has developed an antidote: The 15 Second Film Festival. And it’s not an exaggeration. Each film that Johnston commissions or makes himself for the online festival is indeed 15 seconds long, with about 10 seconds for opening and closing credits.

Videos & more after the jump.

For those who might scoff at the concept, Johnston argues:

Fifteen-second film is an art form in itself, not a stepping stone to making longer movies. It’s like a filmic haiku or a three-panel cartoon strip.

Which, actually, makes a lot of sense. And in a culture where much of our entertainment must be abbreviated for our on-the-go lifestyle, this is an idea that could surpass novelty and really take off.
